Sodalite is so named for its high content of sodium, resulting in the mottled white and gray and blue stone. The blue is caused by inclusions most likely of aluminum and ranges from royal blue to a bright milky blue. One of this stone's nicknames is 'the poor man's lapis', as sodalite and lapis look very similar at a glance. It was discovered in Ontario, Canada in 1891 during a visit of two members of the British Royal Family, giving it the nickname 'Princess Blue' as well. However, it was used for trade currency in Peru and Bolivia as early as 2,600 BC. These smooth round beads are 6mm in size.
Semi-precious stone beads are mined all over the world and then are usually cut in China. They will often be dyed or color-treated to enhance their appearance. We select the best quality semi-precious that is available, and try to avoid finishes that are not durable. It is best to assume that some semi-precious beads will fade over time.
