These unique salt-and-pepper stones are made primarily of obsidian flecked with inclusions of cristobalite, a milk-white mineral. They are found primarily in North and South America, with small deposits in Asia and Africa. These stones are often black mixed with gray and white to give them a speckled appearance. Obsidian is a volcano-formed glass, while cristobalite is a mineral formed in the same environment. These snowflake obsidian beads are smooth and round, measuring at 8mm.
Semi-precious stone beads are mined all over the world and then are usually cut in China. They will often be dyed or color-treated to enhance their appearance. We select the best quality semi-precious that is available, and try to avoid finishes that are not durable. It is best to assume that some semi-precious beads will fade over time.
