Onyx is a form of quartz created in gas cavities in lava, and has a multi-layered structure to it that appears to be a translucent white or clear layer over a colored core. The word 'onyx' derives from the Greek word 'fingernail'. According to ancient myths, Eros (or Cupid) trimmed the fingernails of the sleeping Goddess Aphrodite (or Venus), and the Fates turned the clippings into stones to prevent any part of her from dying. Romans used onyx stones to create seals and cameos. These beads are a rich black in color with a layer of translucence to them. Smooth and round, the beads measure at 6mm.
Semi-precious stone beads are mined all over the world and then are usually cut in China. They will often be dyed or color-treated to enhance their appearance. We select the best quality semi-precious that is available, and try to avoid finishes that are not durable. It is best to assume that some semi-precious beads will fade over time.
