Lapis is one of the oldest stones in existence, made of several minerals put together including lazurite, calcite, pyrite, mica, and more. These stones are deep blue, mottled with golds and creams. Some famous uses of this stone are in the death mask of young King Tutankhamen, as eyeshadow for Cleopatra, and in the murals and jewelry of Ancient Mayan and Aztec cultures. The word 'lapis' quite literally translates from Latin to the English word 'stone'. Earliest recorded uses of lapis occur more than 6,500 years ago. These smooth round beads are 6mm in size.
Semi-precious stone beads are mined all over the world and then are usually cut in China. They will often be dyed or color-treated to enhance their appearance. We select the best quality semi-precious that is available, and try to avoid finishes that are not durable. It is best to assume that some semi-precious beads will fade over time.
