Poppy jasper is a form of quartz layered with silicate and petrified earth deposits that give it a banded or mottled red that is then enhanced with a striking crimson dye. The dye doesn't affect the deposits, creating a beautiful contrast of golds, browns, and ivories with the rich dark reds. The word 'jasper' is derived from the Greek word 'iaspis', which means 'spotted stone'. These semi-precious stones are smoothed chips that vary in size, but are roughly 5mm x 8mm.
Semi-precious stone beads are mined all over the world and then are usually cut in China. They will often be dyed or color-treated to enhance their appearance. We select the best quality semi-precious that is available, and try to avoid finishes that are not durable. It is best to assume that some semi-precious beads will fade over time.
