Picture jasper is a variety of quartz that forms intricate and beautiful bands from silicate deposits or petrified earth, creating remarkable designs. The layers of brown, blue, black, tan, or ivory create a mottled look that lends to the stone's name. The word 'jasper' derives from the Greek word 'iaspis', which means 'spotted stone'. These semi-precious stones were often used to make vases and jewelry in the past, as far back as ancient Egypt. This strand features smoothed chips of stone that vary slightly in size and shape, but are about 5mm x 8mm.
Semi-precious stone beads are mined all over the world and then are usually cut in China. They will often be dyed or color-treated to enhance their appearance. We select the best quality semi-precious that is available, and try to avoid finishes that are not durable. It is best to assume that some semi-precious beads will fade over time.
