Perhaps unsurprisingly, magnesite stones are primarily made of magnesium. Banding and color variations are created by varying amounts of carbonates, oxides, and silicates. Blue Magnesite is created when the porous stone is enhanced with dye, creating a look similar to turquoise. Native Americans carve magnesite beads into jewelry, and used to use it as a form of currency. As currency, the beads were so valuable that they were traded individually instead of by the strand. These beads are slightly convex flattened discs, 14mm in size.
Semi-precious stone beads are mined all over the world and then are usually cut in China. They will often be dyed or color-treated to enhance their appearance. We select the best quality semi-precious that is available, and try to avoid finishes that are not durable. It is best to assume that some semi-precious beads will fade over time.
