Kumihimo Lupine Necklace

Kumihimo is an ancient braiding technique that traditionally uses multiple colors of silk cord to form elaborate designs. More recently, kumihimo using beads has become a popular way to add pattern, texture, and a variety of colors into one fun piece. Combine the C-Lon Fine Weight beading cord, Swarovski pearls, size 8/0 seed beads and Miyuki Long Drops (LDP) into your eight strand braid to create a playful spiral resembling a lupine flower in full bloom.

In the words of Ms. Rumphius: “You must do something to make the world more beautiful." Whether you're planting flowers everywhere you go or wearing this necklace, making the world a little prettier each day will bring a smile to your face and each person you meet.

Kumihimo stringing instructions

1. Cut a 5 foot length of the fine weight C-Lon cord and place a piece of folded tape at the center. With your Big Eye needle, thread on 50 of the 8/0 seed beads. Remove the Big Eye needle, fold open one of the E-Z Bob bobbins and wrap the cord tightly onto the bobbin and fold shut. String on 50 more of the 8/0 seed beads onto the other side of the cord and wrap the end around another bobbin. Now two of your eight ends are complete! Repeat this step three more times for a total of eight bobbin ends, each with 50 beads per side. You will have two sets of 8/0 seed beads, one set of the Long Drops, and one set of the Swarovski pearls. (Use the Collapsible Eye needles to string the Swarovski pearls onto the cord as they have very small holes.)

2. Roll the bobbins down and away from the taped center, exposing more cord. Gather the cords together and remove the pieces of tape. Keep hold of the middle of the cords so your beads don't slide from one side to the other!

Kumihimo necklace directions

3. Make an overhand knot to secure the cords together.

4. Pass the knot through the front of the kumihimo disk.

5. Attach a small weight to the loop on the underside of the kumihimo disk - we like to use a couple of house keys so it isn't too heavy. Too much weight creates a looser braid.

Kumihimo Lupine Necklace instructions

6. Flipping the disk back over, arrange your cords on either side of the four dots on the disk. The placement of the strands is very important to the final look of the braid, so check the positions carefully. Make sure the beads are not on the face of the disk, but dangling over the edge. Roll the bobbins down if the beads are too close to the disk.

7. You will start by braiding two rounds with your cord to create a secure end. Take the 8/0 cord at the top right of the disk (between the numbers 32 and 1) and bring it down the disk to the bottom, placing it in the slot just to the right of where the Swarovski pearl strand rests (between the numbers 14 and 15.)

8. Take the 8/0 cord at the bottom left position (between the numbers 16 and 17) and bring it to the top of the disk, just to the left of the Swarovski pearl strand (between the numbers 30 and 31.)

9. Turn the disk 90 degrees to the right, so that the dot marking 24 is at the top. These are the three basic steps to kumihimo and they will be repeated throughout the project.

Kumihimo directions

10. As in step 7, bring the top right 8/0 cord (between the numbers 24 and 25) to the bottom of the disk just right of the Long Drop strand (between the numbers 6 and 7.)

Kumihimo step by step instruction

11. Repeat step 8, bringing the bottom left 8/0 cord (between the numbers 8 and 9) to the top of the disk, just left of the Long Drop strand (between the numbers 22 and 23.)

17. Repeat step 8, bringing the bottom left Long Drop cord (between the numbers 23 and 24) to the top just left of the 8/0 strand (between the numbers 5 and 6.) Rotate the disk 90 degrees to the right, so that the number 32 is at the top. You have just completed one full rotation of all the cords. Repeat steps 7 - 17 for a second full rotation of all the cords before adding any beads. You will end up with your top 2 threads between 27 and 28, and 28 and 29.

Kumihimo with beads instruction

18. To begin adding beads to the braid, pick up the top right 8/0 cord, slide one bead down the strand to the center of the braid.

Kumihimo with beads step by step

19. The first few beads like to misbehave, so make sure they stay in place as you work. The bead should be caught against the first strand to its right, as you move the cord to the bottom right position.

Kumihimo step by step instruction

20. NOTE: The 8/0 bead should be sitting mostly upright (so you can see down through its hole). If the bead does not catch against the cord properly, it will show up sideways in the braid or fall into the hollow center of the braid.

25. Pick up the bottom left Swarovski pearl cord and slide one pearl down to the center of the braid. The bead should be caught against the first strand to its left, as you move the cord into the top left position.

Kumihimo step by step instructions

26. Rotate the disk 90 degrees to the right, picking up the top right cord. Move the Long Drop bead down to the center of the braid, it may spin towards the middle of the braid, so make sure it sticks out from the center. The bead should be caught against the first strand to its right, as you move the cord to the bottom right position.

27. Pick up the bottom left cord and move the Long Drop bead to the center of the braid, making sure it does not spin inward. The bead should be caught against the first strand to its left, as you move the cord into the top left position.

28. Continue braiding in this manner until you have used all of the strung beads. When the beads get too close to the disk, roll the bobbins down again. If the beads press against the bottom of the disk it can cause problems with your tension.

29. Check out how gorgeous your kumihimo braid looks by flipping the disk over or peeking underneath.

30. Once all the beads have been incorporated into the braid, do another two full rotations of braiding only with the cords (as in the beginning) to secure the beaded section.

Kumihimo step by step instruction

31. Take the four cords that would be braided next and remove the bobbins. Cut the cords to be about one foot in length. Begin a surgeon's knot by tying an overhand knot, and tighten down to the braid.

Kumihimo with beads step by step

32. Complete the surgeon's knot by passing the left cord over the right, looping around twice, and tighten down to the braid again. Repeat steps 31 and 32 for the remaining four cords.

33. Remove the braid from the disk.

34. Cut your wire into two four inch pieces. Create an "L" shape with the wires. Pass the shorter end of the "L" through the center of the braid close to where the beads begin.

Kumihimo tutorial

35. Hold the longer part of the wire tight against the braid, while wrapping the shorter end 3 - 4 times around both. Use flat nose pliers for a tight grip, and wrap upwards towards the knot. After completing the wire wrap, tighten the knots in the cord in case they loosened during the wrapping process.

Kumihimo step by step

36. Using the Hypo Cement, glue the knots at the end of the braid. Trim off the cord just above knot.

Kumihimo with beads instruction

37. While the knot is still wet from the glue, slide the cone down over the knot. Add an accent bead to the wire.

Kumihimo with Miyuki Long Drops

38. Make a wrapped loop, pressing down tightly against the cone to ensure it covers the knot and wire wrapping completely.

39. Repeat steps 35 through 38 for the other end. Attach the chain and clasp to your finished braid and enjoy!
